COSMOS

California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science

In 2022, I attended the COSMOS program at UCSD. I selected to be part of Cluster 6: Biodiesel from Renewable Resources because of my personal interests in sustainability as well as getting some wet lab experience.

During this program, I learned how to make biodiesel, test its content quality, and research potential biodiesel and other biofuel applications.

I led a research project and worked with a biodegradable footwear company Algenesis and UCSD Professor Pomeroy to turn algae media into biodegradable foam.

I performed Karl Fischer titration to measure the water content in my biofuel sample. I also used a bomb calorimeter to test my fuel sample by measuring the temperature rise to calculate the calorific value of my biofuel. I completed a certification of analysis for my biofuel by testing viscosity, ion chromatography, cloud point, and density, and analyzed my sample using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

In summarizing my work, I authored a paper and created a presentation on the impact of using algae as a biofuel.
